Binchotan is a high-quality product of white charcoal, which is made only in special earthen kilns and extinguished outside the kiln on sand. The high quality of binchotan, the "flower" of charcoals lies in the sophistication of the highly refined production technique used to make it.
This production technique is roughly divided into eight stages, starting with the felling of a tree, straightening bent timber, placing the wood into a specially shaped bincho kiln, drying the wood, carbonizing it, refining the carbonized product, removing it from the kiln, and finally extinguishing it on sand outside the kiln.
